Too many males in your African Cichlid aquarium?

I sexed my colony of Tropheus Golden Kazumba.  Looks like 10 males to 8 females for a total of 18. The breeding has slowed down, so I decided to move 6 males to another tank.

Tropheus Golden Kazumba Female

Low and behold there is a female with a huge mouthful the next day. This is the best picture I could get. The angle of the photo doesn’t really show how stuffed her mouth is with eggs.

I think there was just too many males interrupting the mating ritual. The females had bred before but lately the eggs were not fertilizing and would disappear after 3 or 4 days.

If you have the numbers, I would also try moving surplus males to another tank to give your Alpha a chance to do his “job” properly.
